OUR HISTORY
Lincoln Manufacturing was founded in 1972 by Walter V. Spotte, whose roots ran deep in the coal mining industry. One of four brothers, Walter’s early life was marked by tragedy when his father was killed in a coal mining accident. At just five years old, his family faced immense challenges, but he went on to serve in the Army during WWII and graduate from the University of Illinois. Remarkably, all four brothers attended college and pursued careers in coal mining.
Walter’s career began at Joy Mining in Illinois, but his move to Washington, PA, in the early 1960s was where he truly saw the potential for local manufacturing in the growing coal industry. With determination and a bold vision, he took a significant risk by founding Lincoln Hydraulics in 1972, naming the company after Illinois’ “Land of Lincoln” slogan. Starting in a small rented space, Lincoln grew rapidly, expanding into the steel industry and eventually moving into a larger facility in the 1980s.
In 2003, after a successful career, Walter retired, selling the business to the Piatt family, close friends and visionary leaders in the steel and coal mining industries.
Under the Piatt brothers’ leadership, Lincoln Manufacturing has flourished, moving into a 70,000-square-foot facility and expanding the workforce to more than 100 employees. Continuing to expand and grow, an additional location was opened in Youngstown, OH, in 2019.
The company has proudly retained the name “Lincoln” as a tribute to Walter, honoring his pioneering spirit and the foundation he built.
